Cultural Resources Services

Archaeological/Historical Consultants (A/HC) is a cultural resources management firm based in Oakland, California. We have prepared archaeological and historical studies for private and public clients throughout northern and central California since 1976.

If you or your clients need to determine whether your project will affect archaeological sites, historic buildings, and cultural landscapes, we can help.

What we do

State and Federal law requires that developers, planners, and engineers consider whether their projects will affect cultural resources. A/HC helps keep our clients’ projects on track by preparing technical documents that meet CEQA and Section 106 regulations. Depending on your project, this might include a record search, archaeological sensitivity assessment, archaeological survey of a property, or evaluation of an older building. If a cultural resource is identified, we evaluate whether it meets the criteria of the California Register of Historical Resources or the National Register of Historic Places.

We also assist environmental planners by preparing Environmental Impact Report sections on cultural resources and providing peer reviews of cultural resources studies. We also have decades of experience providing forensic historical research in support of toxic torts.

Our Experience

A/HC completes about 30 projects per year, ranging in size from 1 to 6,000 acres. We have experience with the full range of archaeological projects from survey through mitigation excavation, and with historic architectural research from building evaluations through HABS/HAER recording.

We enjoy good relationships with regulators, and have produced documents for many Federal agencies, including Caltrans/FHWA, the US Army Corps of Engineers, HUD, FCC, and US Fish and Wildlife. Our CEQA work has helped dozens of cities, counties, and special districts. Our practice is focused on the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area, but we also have substantial experience in the north coast, central coast, valley, and northern Sierra regions.
